This course is designed specifically for youth workers like you who are ready to embrace the beautiful diversity of the LGBTIQ+ community and are eager to learn more about their perspectives, backgrounds, history, culture, needs, and challenges.

In this course, we’ll be exploring the world of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC), a key foundation for understanding and supporting LGBTIQ+ young people. We’ll dive into the rich spectrum of LGBTIQ+ identities and issues, and we’ll get comfortable with the terminology that helps us talk about these topics in a respectful and inclusive way.
We’ll also spend time on the important topic of pronouns, understanding their role in affirming individuals’ identities and how to use them correctly. We’ll explore the concept of gender-neutral language, understanding not just the ‘how’, but also the ‘why’ behind it.
Finally, we’ll tackle some key concepts like heteronormativity and cisnormativity, helping you to understand the societal norms and biases that can impact LGBTIQ+ young people and how we can challenge these in our youth work.
By the end of this course, you’ll have a solid understanding of SOGIESC and related concepts, and you’ll be equipped with the language skills to communicate in a way that is inclusive and affirming of all identities. You’ll be modelling these practices in your work, helping to create a more inclusive and understanding environment for all young people.
